If you are thinking about getting into skateboarding, you may be wondering what skateboard rails are for and if they are a necessary accessory to the sport? The answers to those questions will be determined by the intensity and dedication you become to the sport of skateboarding.

The ultimate purpose of skateboard rails is to set apart amateur skateboarders from accomplished, professional skateboarders. Skateboard rails allow boarders to show their skills and creativity while maintaining a finesse position and oneness with their skateboard.

The initial use of skateboards in the early 1950’s was primal compared to how they’re used today. Skaters originally rode boards up and down hills dodging cones or cars; with the help of an improved design and materials, skateboarders are able to flip, fly, hop, leap, skid and turn using obstacles such as beams, bowls, curbs, ramps and rails

Skateboarders typically practice skateboarding at skate parks; while some that can’t get enough, build their own ramps at home. Skate parks are ideal as they usually have several ramps of various sizes and increases, bowls for building height and speed, and rails for grinding, sliding, balancing and other paradoxical maneuvers.

New skateboarders with goals of grinding rails and performing fancy flips should slowly work up to this polished level of boarding. Instead of practicing to learn the skills associated with skateboard railing and the like, first become one with your board. As you become comfortable and polished with balance and skill your creativity will begin to seek an edge, that’s when the rails will follow.
